The Construction (Design & Management) Regulations 2007 came into force on 6 April 2007. These new regulations combined together CDM Regulations and Construction (Health, Safety & Welfare) Regulations into a single set of regulations CDM 2007.

These new regulations were introduced to improve health and safety on construction projects, by ensuring that competent persons are appointed to undertake roles within any project. The focus has shifted onto principles of prevention and management of residual risks within any project.

The role of the CDM Co-ordinator includes:

  • Advise and assist the client with his/her duties
  • Notify HSE of projects of more than 30 days duration and 500 persons days
  • Co-ordinate health and safety aspects of design work and co-operate with others involved with the project
  • Ensure good communication between client, designers and contractors
  • Liaise with the principal contractor regarding ongoing design
  • Identify, collect and pass on pre construction information
  • Prepare/update health and safety files
